What garage door cables do

The lift cables connect the springs to the door. On a torsion system, a braided steel cable runs from a bracket at each bottom corner of the door up to a grooved drum on the spring shaft. When the spring unwinds, the drums turn, the cables wrap around them and the door rises evenly on both sides.

On an extension spring system, the cables run over pulleys and attach to the springs along the horizontal tracks. A second set, called safety cables, runs through the middle of each spring to contain it if it breaks.

Either way, the cables carry the weight of the door every time it moves. They are the link between the energy stored in the springs and the door itself.

Signs a cable is failing or has come off

Cables usually wear first at the bottom, where moisture and road salt collect near the floor. They also slip off the drums when a spring breaks, when the door lands on something while closing, or when the door is run with its tracks out of alignment. Look for these signs:

  • The door sits crooked in the opening, one side higher than the other.
  • A cable is hanging loose or lying on the garage floor.
  • Broken wire strands, rust or kinks near the bottom bracket.
  • Cable has unwound from the drum and tangled around the shaft.
  • The door jerks, shudders or binds in the tracks as it moves.
  • The door stopped partway and will not go up or down.

Why a loose cable should not wait

With one cable off, the door is carried by one side only. It twists in the opening, rollers get forced out of the tracks and panels can crease. Running the opener in that state usually makes the damage worse and the repair larger.

If the door is stuck open and crooked, do not stand or park under it and do not pull the release cord. The door could drop. Leave it where it is and call us.

How the technician repairs or replaces the cables

The technician first secures the door and takes the tension off the springs. The old cables come off, and the drums, bottom brackets, pulleys and bearings are inspected, because a cracked drum or a seized pulley will chew through a new cable.

New cables are matched to the door’s height and weight, seated in the drum grooves and tensioned evenly so both sides lift together. The springs are rewound, the tracks are checked for alignment and the door is cycled several times to confirm it travels level and the cables stay on their drums.

Cables are normally replaced in pairs. The second cable has done the same work as the first, and two matching cables keep the door even.

Estimate, warranty and scheduling for cable work

You are told what the repair involves and what it costs before the work starts, with no hidden charges. Replacement cables and any other parts we install carry a 3-year warranty.

Cable work means handling parts under spring tension, including the bottom brackets, which should never be loosened on a door under load. This is not a repair to attempt yourself. Call (614) 500-4377 or send a request online and we will get you on the schedule. Our shop is in Plain City, and we cover Franklin, Delaware and Union counties.

Garage Door Cable Repair: common questions

Can I close my garage door if a cable has come off?

Do not run the opener. Depending on where the door stopped, lowering it can bend the tracks or let the door fall, so leave it in place and call for service.

What causes garage door cables to break?

Wear, rust and fraying from years of use are the main causes. A broken spring, a worn pulley or a damaged drum can also cut a cable’s life short.

Do both cables need replacing if only one broke?

That is the usual practice. The cables are the same age and have carried the same load, and replacing both keeps the door lifting evenly.

Is a cable problem the same as a spring problem?

No, but the two are often connected. A broken spring lets the cables go slack and slip off, so the technician checks both before deciding what needs replacing.
