Common garage door problems we repair

Most service calls come down to a handful of parts. A garage door is a heavy panel balanced by springs, lifted by cables, guided by rollers in steel tracks and moved by an opener. When one of those parts wears out, the whole door behaves differently.

These are the symptoms that usually mean a repair is needed:

  • The door lifts a few inches and stops, or will not lift at all. This often points to a broken spring.
  • The door hangs crooked, with one side lower than the other. A cable has usually slipped or snapped.
  • The door closes partway and goes back up. Dirty or misaligned safety sensors are the usual cause.
  • Grinding, scraping or popping sounds from worn rollers, dry hinges or a bent track.
  • The opener motor runs but the door does not move.

Why a door comes off its track

Rollers ride inside vertical and horizontal tracks bolted to the wall and ceiling. A door leaves the track when something forces a roller out: a car bumping the door, a broken cable letting one side drop, loose track brackets, or worn rollers that no longer sit properly in the channel.

If your door is off track, stop using it. Running the opener can bend the track, crease the panels or pull the remaining rollers out. Keep people and vehicles clear of the door and call us.

What the technician does on a repair visit

The technician looks at the whole door, not only the part that failed. That means checking the springs, cables, drums, rollers, hinges, tracks, opener and safety sensors, then testing the balance of the door by hand where it is safe to do so.

You hear what was found and what it will cost before the repair begins. There are no hidden charges. Once you approve the work, the technician replaces or adjusts the faulty parts, lubricates the moving hardware and runs the door through several full cycles to confirm it opens, closes and reverses the way it should.

The technicians who come to your home are A1’s own trained employees. We do not use subcontractors, and the company is licensed and insured with liability and workers’ compensation coverage.

Repair or replace: how to decide

Most problems can be repaired. Springs, cables, rollers, hinges, sensors and opener parts are all replaceable, and a door with sound panels and straight tracks usually has plenty of life left afterward.

Replacement starts to make sense when several panels are damaged or rusted through, when a wood door has rotted, when parts for an old door are no longer made, or when the same door keeps needing repairs. If we think a new door is the more sensible choice, we will tell you why and give you a free estimate on one.

Warranty, scheduling and what not to do yourself

Parts we replace carry a 3-year warranty. Call (614) 500-4377 or send a request through the form on this site and we will get you on the schedule. The shop is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM.

Springs and cables are under high tension and can cause serious injury if they let go. Do not try to adjust, remove or replace them yourself. Changing remote batteries or wiping the sensor lenses is fine for a homeowner. Anything involving the spring system is a job for a trained technician.

Garage Door Repair: common questions

Can I open my garage door by hand if it is stuck?

If the springs and cables are intact, you can pull the red release cord with the door fully closed and lift it by hand. If a spring or cable is broken, the door will be very heavy and can drop, so leave it alone and call us.

Why does my garage door close partway and then go back up?

The opener reverses when the safety sensors near the floor are blocked, dirty or out of line, or when the door meets resistance on the way down. Clear the doorway and check that both sensor lights are steady. If it keeps happening, the door needs service.

Will I know the cost before the repair starts?

Yes. The technician inspects the door, explains what is wrong and tells you the price before any work begins.
