When it is time for a new garage door

A door is usually replaced for one of three reasons: it has been damaged, it has worn out, or the homeowner wants a different look or a warmer garage. Sagging sections, rust along the bottom, rotted wood, panels that no longer match and repairs that keep coming back are all signs the door has reached the end of its useful life.

Replacement is also a chance to fix things the old door never did well, such as noise, drafts, poor insulation or a lack of windows.

Choosing a door material

Steel is the most common choice. It is strong, needs little upkeep and comes in many panel styles and colors, including finishes that imitate wood grain. Thicker steel resists dents better, so ask about the gauge and whether the door has a steel back skin.

Wood doors offer a look that is hard to copy, but they are heavier and need regular painting or staining to keep moisture out. Composite and fiberglass doors give a wood-like appearance with less maintenance. Aluminum-and-glass doors suit modern homes and let in a lot of light, though they insulate less than a solid insulated door.

We carry doors from manufacturers including Clopay, Amarr, C.H.I. and Wayne Dalton, which gives you a wide range of styles to compare.

Insulation, windows and hardware

Garage doors are built in layers. A single-layer door is one sheet of steel with no insulation. A double-layer door adds insulation behind the steel. A triple-layer door sandwiches the insulation between two steel skins, which makes it stiffer, quieter and better at holding temperature.

The insulation is either polystyrene board or injected polyurethane foam. Polyurethane bonds to the steel and gives a higher R-value for the same thickness. An insulated door is worth considering if the garage is attached to the house, has a room above it or is used as a workshop.

Windows, decorative handles and hinges, and panel style (raised panel, flush or carriage house) set the look. The hardware matters as well: nylon rollers and correctly sized torsion springs make a noticeable difference in how quietly the door runs.

From free estimate to installation day

Estimates on new garage doors are free. A technician measures the opening, the headroom above it, the side room and the depth of the garage, and looks at the framing and the existing opener. You then go over styles, insulation levels and options. The price is explained before any work starts, and there are no hidden charges.

On installation day the old door comes out along with its tracks, springs and hardware. The new sections are stacked and hinged, the tracks are set plumb and level, and the springs are installed and wound to balance the door. Weather seal is fitted, the opener is reconnected and its travel and force are reset, and the safety sensors and auto-reverse are tested. The technician then shows you how the door operates.

New doors come with a limited lifetime warranty. The installation is done by A1’s own trained employees. We do not hand jobs to subcontractors, and the company is licensed and insured, with liability and workers’ compensation coverage.

Residential Garage Door Installation: common questions

Is the estimate for a new garage door free?

Yes. Estimates on new garage doors are free, and the price is explained in full before any work begins.

Can I keep my existing opener with a new door?

Often you can, if the opener is in good condition and suited to the new door’s weight. The technician checks it during the estimate and tells you if it should be replaced.

Do I need an insulated garage door?

If your garage is attached, heated or has living space above it, insulation helps with comfort and noise. For a detached, unheated garage, a non-insulated or lightly insulated door may be enough.

Can I install a garage door myself?

We do not recommend it. Setting and winding the springs involves high tension and specialized tools, and mistakes can cause serious injury or leave the door unbalanced.
