How panel damage happens and why it matters

A sectional garage door is made of horizontal panels, usually four or five, joined by hinges so the door can bend around the curve of the track. Each panel is part of the door’s structure, so a damaged one affects more than appearance.

Most panel damage comes from impact: a bumper, a trailer hitch, a basketball, a ladder falling against the door. The rest comes from the door itself. A door run off track or with a broken cable will twist and crease. An opener pulling on an unreinforced top panel can bend it over time. Wood panels rot and swell from moisture, and steel rusts from the bottom edge up.

Signs a panel needs repair or replacement

A bent section puts uneven load on the rollers and hinges. Left alone, it leads to cracked hinges, worn rollers and an opener that works harder than it should. Watch for:

  • A dent or crease that runs across the width of a section.
  • A section that bows inward or sags in the middle when the door is open.
  • Cracks around the hinges or where the opener arm attaches.
  • Gaps between sections that let in light, water or pests.
  • Rust holes along the bottom panel, or soft, splitting wood.
  • The door catches or rubs at the same point each time it moves.

Three ways to fix a damaged panel

Small dents in a steel door that have not creased the metal are often cosmetic. If the section is still straight and the door runs normally, the technician may only need to check the hardware around it.

A section that has started to bend can sometimes be reinforced with a strut, a steel brace fastened across the back of the panel. Struts are commonly added to top sections where the opener attaches and to wide double doors.

A panel that is creased, cracked or rusted through should be replaced. The technician supports the door, releases spring tension, removes the hinges and rollers on the damaged section, fits the new section and reassembles the door. Because the new panel may weigh slightly more or less than the old one, the spring balance is checked afterward.

When replacing the whole door makes more sense

Panel replacement depends on getting a matching section. Manufacturers change designs and discontinue models, and on an older door the exact panel may no longer be made. Even when it is available, a new panel next to faded ones can show a color difference, especially on darker doors.

If two or more sections are damaged, if parts for the door are hard to find, or if the cost of panels approaches the cost of a door, a new door is usually the better choice. Estimates on new garage doors are free, and new doors come with a limited lifetime warranty. We lay out both options so you can compare them.

What to expect from a panel repair visit

To source a panel, the technician needs the brand, model and size of your door. Much of that is printed on a label on the inside of the door. If you can, take a photo of that label and of the damage before you call.

The price is explained before any work starts and there are no hidden charges. Parts we replace are covered by a 3-year warranty. To get on the schedule, call (614) 500-4377 or send a request through the website form.

Garage Door Panel Repair: common questions

Can you replace just one panel of my garage door?

Often, yes, as long as the manufacturer still makes a section that matches your door’s model, size and style. If a match is not available, we explain the alternatives.

Will a new panel match the color of the old ones?

It will match in design, but paint and finish fade with sun and age, so a new section can look slightly different at first. On a painted door, repainting the full door evens it out.

Is it safe to use the door with a dented panel?

A shallow dent is usually fine. If the section is bent or cracked, or the door is binding, stop using it until it has been inspected, because a weakened panel can fold under the opener’s pull.

Can I remove a damaged panel myself?

No. The sections are tied into the cables and springs through the bottom brackets and hinges, and those parts are under high tension. Taking a panel off without releasing that tension properly is dangerous.
