Signs it is time to replace your opener
A working opener does not need replacing just because it is old. If yours is noisy or unreliable, though, a new unit is often the more economical route than repeated repairs. Common reasons to replace:
- It works some days and not others, and repairs have not solved it.
- It is loud enough to hear throughout the house.
- It has no photo-eye safety sensors near the floor.
- Replacement parts or remotes are no longer available.
- You want battery backup, phone control or better lighting.
- You are installing a new, heavier door.
Chain, belt and wall-mount drives compared
Chain-drive openers move the door with a steel chain running along a rail. They are strong, simple and long-lasting. The trade-off is noise and vibration, which makes them better suited to detached garages.
Belt-drive openers replace the chain with a steel-reinforced belt. They run much more quietly and smoothly, and they are the usual recommendation for an attached garage or one with a bedroom above.
Wall-mount openers install on the wall beside the door and turn the torsion shaft directly. With no rail or motor overhead, the ceiling is free for storage, and they run very quietly. They require a torsion spring system, some clear wall space beside the door and a nearby outlet.
Motor power and features worth considering
Opener motors are either AC or DC. DC motors are quieter, start and stop gently and can run from a backup battery. Power is matched to the door: a standard insulated steel door needs less than a heavy wood or oversized door. A balanced door does not need a large motor, and more power will not make up for worn springs.
- Battery backup, so the door still opens during a power outage.
- Wi-Fi control, to open, close and check the door from your phone.
- Rolling-code remotes, which change the signal with every use.
- Automatic deadbolt locks on some models.
- LED lighting and motion-activated lights.
- A keypad outside the door for entry without a remote.
What the installation involves
The technician first checks the door. Springs, cables, rollers and balance are inspected, because a new opener attached to a door that is out of balance will wear out early. If the door needs work, you will hear about it, and the price, before anything is done.
The old opener is taken down and the new unit is assembled and mounted to solid framing. The rail or shaft connection is made, and the top section of the door is reinforced where the arm attaches if it needs it. Safety sensors are mounted near the floor and wired, the wall control is installed, and travel limits and force are set. The technician tests the auto-reverse, programs your remotes and keypad, and shows you how to use the manual release.
Estimate, warranty and scheduling for a new opener
Estimates on new openers are free. You are told the price for the unit and the installation before work starts, and there are no hidden charges. We install LiftMaster and Genie openers.
The work is done by A1’s own trained employees. Ask the technician about the warranty that applies to the model you choose. Garage Door Opener Installation: common questions
Which type of garage door opener is quietest?
Belt-drive and wall-mount openers with DC motors are the quietest. A chain drive is louder but very durable.
Will a new opener work with my existing door?
In most cases, yes. The door has to be balanced and in good repair, and a wall-mount opener needs a torsion spring system.
Do I need a new opener when I get a new door?
Not always. If your opener is in good condition and has working safety sensors, it can often be reconnected to the new door.
Can I open the door if the power goes out?
Yes. Every opener has a manual release cord that disconnects the door so you can lift it by hand, and models with battery backup keep working during an outage.
